It operates in the US through Bayer Corporation. Bayer has reorganized, spinning off its divisions and becoming a management holding company. It also has separated its former chemicals subgroup, which was spun off as a publicly traded company called Lanxess in early 2005. In November 2004 Bayer closed a deal for Roche's consumer health unit for nearly $3 billion. The company was founded in 1863. It was formerly known as Farbenfabriken Bayer AG and changed its name to Bayer AG in 1972.
